Several years ago we had a bad accident when a FLT ran over a contractor. We were slated by the HSE for only giving our guys B1 FLT training (upto 5T) and familiarisation training with the 5.5T FLTs we use on site. They said familiarisation training wasn't enough and we needed to give everyone B2 (above 5T) training.
We occasionally have agency employees in who only seem to have the B1 class licence, this creates a problem in that we have to get an external company in to retest for a B2 licence. Having rung RTITB they have said I just need to give in-house familiarisation training with the agency employees on the 5.5T FLTs if the employee already has a B1 licence.
Please can anyone clarify exactly what I need to do!! I seem to be getting conflicting info from the HSE and RTITB.

Hi Bristow,
A couple of points here. If all your employer got was a slating for that then I would count myself lucky. I understand you point about the drivers being trained for machines up to 5 tonnes and yours only being 5.5 but in reality, the B1 machines used for training are never anywhere near the upper limit.
RTITB is Ltd company as opposed to the HSE which are an enforcing authority. And as you say, your employer already has history.
I'd follow the HSE's steer, especially if you've been slated not following that guidance before.

Thanks Safety Smurf. I agree that we were very lucky! But back then it was genuinely thought that the familiarisation training was enough.
I worry that other company's may fall into this trap though as speaking to the agency (we have now gone through three due to the confusion over sending unqualified workers to site), they have not had this problem before with any other company. I do not believe that we are the only company to employ agency workers who will use over 5T trucks!
Anyway will play it safe and ensure he is upgraded to the correct class of licence.
Thanks again
