Hi all, Can anyone give me some defintive guidenance on where abrasive wheels training is required under the abrasive wheels regulations. Scenario: Engineering workshop Equipment: Fixed becnch and hand held 4", 7" and 9" air operated grinders. We have a fixed bench grinder, fed by a 13amp supply etc (ones readily available from any trade stores etc). Some one has told me that the regulations dont apply to this type of equipment. Can some one give me some guidence to the legal requirements of the abrasive wheels regs and whether a fixed bench grinder would apply. I seem to think it would be..My previous expeirance is that persons who change wheels on the grinders should be trained and a wheel register maintained, with a list of trained persons to change the wheels displayed. If some is using the bench grinder, but not changing the wheels etc would just a simple record of training be sufficient as many of the engineers have many years practical experiance or may be timed served apprentices but not necessarily be trained as required by the regs. . Thanks Ian

The Abrasive wheel regulations have long gone. It’s all covered under PUWER specifically regulation 9. See the specific guidance from the HSE as well – see http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/hsg17.pdf

Ian, All work equipment is covered by PUWER 98. Abrasive Wheels have their own ACOP - HSG 17 which is well worth downloading for FREE off the HSE Website. I can give you details of a manufacturer who provides very low cost and very good "Training the Trainer Courses". If want the details PM me and I'll forward them. hope thats of use, Clive

A friend of mine delivered an A/W Course a few months ago in an Engineering Workshop and two of the blokes who each had nearly 40 years experience didn't know ANYTHING about the rpm of the cutting disc. They even used run down discs from a 9 inch grinder on a 4 inch grinder on a regular basis...without knowing of the possible consequences.
