Hi, I'm new here, I passed my Nebosh general Cert 2 1/2 yrs ago and have been used(not sure if thats the correct word) by my present employer for Health and Safety on a reactive basis i.e when a Principal contractor requires a HS&E inspection /report when our operatives are working on their sites or when certain certs are about to expire (CHAS), and 90% of the time I am on construction sites working manually. I want a career in Health and Safety and feel that in my current role the oppotunity is slipping by. I have applied for other H&S Vacancies without success. Any Suggestions

Although I don't live in the U.K., I have certainly experienced what many there who currently seek a full-time position in OH&S - very limited career opportunities for those new to the field. While there are certainly no guarantees in life, when I was unable to gain full-time employment in OH&S, I continued to pursue more formal education in the field; I considered it an investment in myself, and my future. It certainly took a while, but I was eventually able to secure a position, and have not looked back since. It isn't unusual for any of us to find a career opportunity that at that moment we are not qualified for, only to see another similar position posted several years later, where due to the fact that we did nothing in the interim period, were again unable to apply or be selected for the position. I say this because I have had this experience more than once in my life. Keep the faith as they say, but also consider that continuing your OHS education now may be an excellent investment in your future.

Julesbon70, on top of Argyll's excellent advice, I would say, network shamelessly, make contacts as best you can on all web job sites, get your CV out to everywhere even for jobs you think you wont get, they'll keep it on file for future vacancies, and definitely get a CV that works and keep it up to date. thats my 2 cents I was in the same boat a few years back and got right into my studies and anything I could to get some exposure to H&S and when the worm turned, I was in. As with studies in lull times (now) investing in yourself you have the capability to make your investment a sure thing. This post may be the kind of advice that would be good to see in the thread "is the diploma worth it".
