Hi Just wondering if anyone had safety information on roadside/vehicle recovery? I am looking to risk assess this activity and develop a SSoW. I will also be carrying out training with our recovery guys. I am not familiar with safety guidance associated with vehicle recovery so any information, training docs or SSoW would be useful. Thanks in advance

The Institute of Vehicle Recovery look after this sector so their website would be a good start: www.theivr.com Hsg261 (HSE's guidance on vehicle maintenance) also has a couple of pages on VR which is also a good start as this document is free. Not cheap, but if you need belts and braces “PAS43:2008 Safe Working of Vehicle Breakdown, Recovery and Removal Operations: Management System Specification” is the industry bible. Good luck Regards, Ian

Note: RIDDOR does not apply to moving vehicle incidents that are deemed RTC's. However I am confident [without reading the regs today] that it does apply to off loading and other road side situations where an RTC is not present but an on rosd event has taken place e.g. the RAC guy could ge knowked down by a moving vehicle where the guy standing still and working on a car with his vehicle parked

This is one of those instances when Dynamic RA, in its true sense, is very useful as few pick ups are ever identical except in broad detail and even then hazards can quickly arise/change. Bob

Thanks for the replies Bob L - totally agree. I plan to include DRA as part of their training. Recovery is so dynamic it would require careful review of the circumstances and planning at the scene RichP - thanks for the links, there was a few there I didnt have, cheers Phillips - currently looking at MVR Guidance, a few good pointers in that document, enough to get me started. I'm looking looking more detailed guidance - hoping that someone might send me an example SSoW that I can review. Thanks again guys
