Hi all a question to CDMcs when preparing a pre-tender PCI do you have a prefered standard phrase you use that requests the provision of welfare facilities from the PC? It appears to be frowned upon to ask that Welfare should meet the requirements of CDM Schedule 2 what are your thoughts please? if possible does anyone have a prompt list including standard phrases they could share in respect of the PCI Cheers D

David, I have prepared many Pre Construction Information Packs and have always specified that the welfare arrangements must be in accordance with Schedule 2. It saves having to list all of the specific items. I've never had a Client or a Contractor "frown" on this phrase. Almost all principal contractors have a standard template of welfare provision ready to include in their Construction Phase Plan. PH2

David, as PH2 says 'Welfare' is the appropriate term/phrase to use, otherwise you have to list sanitary, washing, changing, drinking, eating and rest facilities', and schedule 2 is the list to work from. I have to agree with you though that some contractors do frown when I go through the list, especialy in projects of renovation where space might be limited, and for example number of tables, chairs with backs etc they say they'll find difficult to provide. And remember it does say in Reg 13 'Every contractor shall ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that the requirements of Schedule 2 are complied with throughout the construction phase' It's that SFAIRP thing again. Its interesting to note that those who cannot supply adequate welfare for their staff can always provide it for themselves - this comment is after being in this game for 45 years! Things in many areas have not changed

Quite right bob. The last time I had to argue with a contractor about getting a wash hand basin near the loo we were having the meeting sitting in his enormous £30k+ Toyota 4x4 :o/
