Advise please . OK I don't want to harp on to much , but finding a post in my location is not really happening , CV registered from here to lands end .I know there is a lot of us in the same boat , I know . So I have 20 odd years of construction experience , nebosh cont cert , half way through my DIP, confined spaces trained , nvq qualification in drainage construction , doing 3 day first aid at work in a weeks time . I do have work experience So what,s to stop me from advertising locally for H&S services which i could provide ? I have P.I & P L I insurance . I do regard my self as very experienced ( work-wise) but not as much in H&S capacity And now not greatly qualified but from what I have learned still more than some H&S people I have encountered ( not meant to be any thing other than a fact sorry ) So basically am I missing some very important issues here ? It is something that I would like to pursue again everything based on competence and being fully professional , There could be work out there but until I try I will not find out . I just looking for any thoughts / experiences . thanks

Go for it ! And you can get free mentoring / support from this site [to an extent] or even me [as I am running up to the end of my career [~30 years] in this profession and too many years to count at work ] and similar types who want to help the young ones

I am in the same boat Joe and as Bob has mentioned a mentor would be a great help. Are you looking for a permanant job or as a consultant. I have started by going to old customers and asking if they have risk assessments etc in place and asking if they would consider you as their H&S advisor with a retainer for emergencies. This does two things gives you confidence because people actually talk to you and also starts your c.v/portfolio. Dont get too frustrated I did my NEBOSH last September thinking it would be the path to endless jobs. Turns out you need to really put in the legwork, I have trawled the high street and so on and you may only get one job but it does mean leads and people talk. Good Luck Nice to hear the comment Bob made about helping the young ones

They say it's tough at the top. Well it's not that easy at the bottom either as many of us are finding out in a number of different ways. I have over forty years experience in the construction industry. No only been there, done that but actually worn the tee shirt out. Then I was made redundant and out of work for the very first time in my life. I made 67 Job Applications in three months and delivered personally as many as I could. I got three replies. Then by pure chance one of my old bosses rang me to say he was looking for a Health and Safety Manager and would I be interested before he advertised the post. Needless to say I felt as if I had won the Lottery and bit his hand off. I can't offer much help to those of you who are struggling other than to say try not to feel too dishearted. You have valuable skills and experience which someone somewhere will be looking to employ. Finding that employer is so very hard at the moment but have confidence that you will get there eventually
