Good morning all,
I am getting stuck on a section from our safety walk guidelines at our site, it states that > 25% of actions listed shall be on awareness / behaviour aspects (human aspects).
Can anyone tell me what this actually means or what you think it means please, as i am not exactly sure.
Regards,
Torres

This is the sort of thing that makes our job difficult. Bizarre prescriptions and pointless auditing requirements. As far as I am concerned these are YOUR guidelines so YOU decide what you expect to see on a safety walk. Who imposed this requirement, external auditor or a consultant?

These guidelines came from our group VP HSEQ

Ask him what he wants or expects. It's his job to explain this sort of stuff.

This does sound a bit 'ivory tower' mangement. Ideally you should have been given some guidance as to what aspects of human behaviour you are supposed to observe and to record. That said, you could identify good working practices ie compliance with PPE, using equipment correctly, using designated walking areas and vice versa. You could also talk to people as you do your walk and ask them some questions based on their role nd record any significant comments.

It's a strange sort of tool which dictates what your outcomes will be! It might be fairer to say that the 'guidance' for those conducting safety tours and safety inspections highlights the importance of identifying and addressing behavioural and compliance issues, as opposed to just "hazard spotting". I don't see why anyone would want to try to quantify this in real-time. Such quantification would serve a purpose for on-going trends analysis though.
