Can anyone confirm if the proposed IOSH accreditation to consult for businesses up and running? Also as a memeber of GRADIOSH can one consult independently for businesses? I suppose one can, however I'm confused about the accrediation, what is it about? If one is a GRADIOSH how does this accreditation apply.

The relatively new Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (OSHCR) replaced the old IOSH register of consultants in January this year: http://www.oshcr.org/from that web site: Consultants must have achieved at least one of the following: Chartered status with IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health); CIEH (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health); or REHIS (Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland) with health and safety qualifications Fellow status with IIRSM (International Institute of Risk and Safety Management) with degree level qualifications Member or Fellow status with BOHS (British Occupational Hygiene Society) Faculty of Occupational Hygiene Registered Member or Fellow status with IEHF (Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors).

It is not illegal in this country that I know of for anybody to set up as a consultant without any form of training, competence, experience etc in any area except in very specialist [not necessarily medical!] areas. And by becoming a consultant via a recognised professional body U are demonstrating some competence and standards

Bob is quite right, there are no particular requirements to be reached to allow yourself to trade as a safety consultant.
It would be up to you to demonstrate and possibly convince a Court if you were ever asked to justify you actions/recommendations etc.
Training/qualifications are just one element of the 'competence' calculation.
There is no need to be a member of IOSH or other institution, there is no need to seek approval/accreditation.
Such organisation have simply cornered the market in being recognised as supposed experts in a health and safety.
I would have no problems using your services, if you could convince me you had the knowledge and expereience and relevant educational recognised qualifications in claimed area of expertise.
I wouldn't be bothered if you were a member of IOSH or any other institution.
I'm a safety engineer, but not a member of IOSH. I don't need to be, for my area/industry of expertise/experience. IOSH training courses don't cover the bits I deal with, so no value in attending such training courses.
