Hi all, I am new to the forum and would like your advice/feedback on what you think would be the right steps forward for me in H&S. I have been in the Construction Industry for 24yrs starting out in groundwork/Civil engineering for 2yrs, Steel erection/steel deck floor laying 2 yrs and have now been in Scaffolding for the last 21 yrs where i have worked my way up to supervisor/management level. But due to the down turn in work through the recession i have gone back on the tools as a scaffolder.
Since the industry dropped into recession i have self funded and successfully completed both NEBOSH General and Construction certs to give myself a better understanding and to increase my chances of securing a H&S position. I am an Advanced scaffolder with Advanced scaffolding inspection certified,PASMA, IPAF/PAL, RT/Counterbalance forklift licence. In my former role my duties included pre-start risk assessment and writing method statements,Scaffolding-Forklift-MEWPS and fall arrest harness safety inspections. As you can see i have got a lot of experience in the Construction Industry but what do you think would be of further benefit to give myself a better chance of securing an Advisor/officers roll?

Have you thought about the renewables energy sector for health and safety roles around the UK.
Many of the skills you have got can be transferable to the renewables sector.
I have transferred to the renewables sector as a health and safety advisor / cdm co - ordinator after several years in construction. I will not be looking back to an industry that is in the doldrums at the moment ( and will be over the next 10 years )
I think construction will struggle to get back to pre- 2008 levels, and I read recently that £37 billion of construction work has not been carried out due to the recession.
Any health and safety opportunities that do arise in construction, there is at least 50 to 100 aplications applying , making it almost impossible in getting your foot in the door.
So I would advise in looking at renewable energy sector for potential roles personally for staff who have a reasonable level of experience in construction.
John.
