Do fire exits have to be built to a specific legal standard?

Hi folks,
we need to get some fire doors put into our store\warehouse, and these need to be put into a concrete breeze block wall.
I have got a local fire safety company to quote this but they are dragging their heels. We have on the staff someone who operates their own building\landscaping business, and he said he would be interetsed in quoting for the work.
He has carried out work on site before and it is of a good standard.
However i wasn't sure if he would be legally allowed to put fire doors into a building, what with cutting a hole in the wall etc.
Are there any legal certs\standards that a builder must have to be able to fit fire doors, or are they just like any other door, but you just have to buy the correct frame and door type etc etc.
I just wondered as it would make things go a lot faster and i don't like not having proper fire exitsin the store.
many thanks folks.

Hi Richard, I'd have a word with the local building control department and ask their advice. Probably you will need a building warrant, possibly planning permission and these would lead to a set of drawings by an architect or technician who should specify exactly what you need to do.

Richard, your title asks about Fire Exits and you then speak of Fire Doors. The former can be installed easily and so long as they are the right size and open easily in the right direction. (In fact a Fire Exit could be a simple hole in the wall that's always open, good as an exit but pretty poor for security!)
The latter need to be installed to ensure compartmentalisation is maintained and is far more specialised.
