Incentive schemes for contractors - are they workable?

Does anyone have any ideas for safety incentives which could be used within the fit out construction sector? I'm thinking about introducing a scheme for our subcontractors and need to find out whether this is workable and if so, what sorts of incentives may work? Any ideas would be welcome.

Eleanor I ran a safety contractors award every 3 months were a contractor was scored by myself and the management , the wining contractor would receive a shield with there name engraved on it and presented to them by the director of my company , also the winning contractor would donate £100.00 to a charity of there choice and we would match this , good pr for your company as well getting the local communality involved we also invited the local papers along

So the winner has to pay £100. Some reward that one :-)).
I should recommend that a contractor who proves they can work safely and get the job done has a chance of winning another contract, if not then no chance.
Health and Safety should by now be an integral part of every employer's undertaking, not something competitive for prizes.

I am not convinced with the worth of safety awards per se, if it's worthwhile for the organisation then sadly there is also an incentive to be dishonest by massaging the AFR/IFR/ stats. Moreover, the under reporting of health and safety incidents does industry not good at all.

You do have tyo be cute with the rules as you can simply incentivise people to do what they should do ie Work Safely.
KPIs based around things you want achieved can be best BUT they need to be clearly measurable eg
Achieve a specified level of training of operatives
Achieving a pre determined level of near miss reports
Achieving less than a set number of nonconformances as determined by independent inspection

Slightly off-topic, but a real gripe of mine. Contractors can be "incentivised" to provide a full service by ensuring contracts make clear that a meaningful % of the fee will not be paid until all information required for the H&S File has been provided.

Ron makes a central point quite clearly. Taking care of clear contractual obligations should assist delivery where full payment is on delivery of measurable meaningful results.
However if incentives are to be considered it might be worth while getting in contact with the authors of the HSE Research Report 896: Leadership and worker involvement on the Olympic Park. There were incentives used during the development of the Olympic Park on some of the projects. It appears that they were not a reward for simply doing their job but for things that were positive in pursuit of improved standards.

While no doubt you would find it a fascinating read. However contacting the authors at the Institute of Employment Studies - address is given in the report - may reveal some further examples. While the scale of the Olympic Park may be a tad bigger than yours, the principle of motivating workers from different sub contractors in construction are similar. Some of the solutions might be relevant to smaller operations as well.
