Can the Nebosh General Certificate be used as a replacement/equivalent qualification for Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) from CITB? It seems that some (big) construction contractors ask their subcontractors to have managers and supervisors trained in SMSTS but when you tell them you have NEBOSH they raise their shoulders. Not that I avoid doing the 5 days SMSTS training, but I'm thinking that maybe NEBOSH Cert covered the SMSTS syllabus, plus much more. Regards.

We would do the same with regards to NEBOSH on our sites. I think that many clients are really not in a place to judge the merits of various training schemes and therefore, understandably, want whatever it says in the guidance. L144 talks about SMSTS or equivalent - easier for them to just say SMSTS. We, as PC, tend to follow those requirements unless there is a big disruption to our core business/training requirements.

This has been raised frequently. It not a question of what is equivalent to what its complying with the requirements of the contractors. If they want all subcontractors to have a certain certificate then that's what you need. Its as simple as that I'm afraid. This might be SMSTS or it might be the 200M breast stroke certificate - its their choice.

To right* An Ameican employer once told me they didn't know about NEBOSH! however. My Associate Degree in Environmental Health & Safety Management gained in the USA would do just fine! the mind boggles.

This would be the one you were awarded by that venerable educational institution –Belford University.

I have both the Nebosh general certificate, and the SMSTS, i found the smsts very easy because of having done the General certificate, but smsts is more detailed in terms of planning a site, and taking in to account actions having a effect, and is aimed at construction, building work...not helped me get work though

I believe if you have the NEBOSH Construction cert this will be much more relevant than the General cert
