Hi guys/gals I was wondering if there is anyone who has worked within a hospital environment, who can give me some advice. I have been asked to attend a interview to manage (facilities management) some Hospitals. I have agreed as its an internal interview (we deal with several sectors) but, I am not entirely sure what I will be managing in the hospital. I imagine it will be looking after contractors, checking the general shell of the building is adequate, inside and out, catering, legionnaires, asbestos managment? My question is - Could anyone give me an insight into managing with the NHS/hospital sector, with regards to Health and Safety. Thanks in advance;

Facilities Management is much more than just H&S A quick Google of ‘facilities management in hospital’ throws up things like;- http://www.cuh.org.uk/cu...s/facilities_index.html This may help give you an idea of the scope.

Jar - Facilities Management in hospitals is pretty much determined by the individual locations but could include one, some or all of the following plus some other areas as well. Fire, H&S, Security Management, portering services, catering, domestic services, ward housekeeping, premises management, control of contractors, transport - on reflection it could be anything EXCEPT the clinical services.

Hi Alan/Bilbo, I appreciate you input but, I will be strictly Health and Safety, not a Facilities Manager. Sunstone - thanks for that, I sure will. Any other advice would be great

There are two distinct areas; day 2 day and clinical [medical people are very protective of clinical] so do not attend an interview unless you know what the job covers as the two are treated differently by medical people but both areas need managing! I advise that you find out more before your interview. Thereafter ask your questions

I suspect you would not be dealing with asbestos, fire or legionella - thats the case at our hospital. Accident investigation is the main issue along with security issues , induction DSE & MOVING AND HANDLING. iN TRUTH RISK MANAGEMENT
