With the exception of a military establishment or fire service college, does anyone know of a fire extinguisher training company (within 2 hours drive of London) which use real fire (from a carbonaceous source and not gas) in it's practical training sessions?

I know this does not answer your enquiry, but I am curious as to why you feel your staff need this type of training?

The large site is occupied by a RP who is a sole supplier of a particular product which would cause considerable difficulties for a key customers worldwide.

An exceptional need has been identified by a combined fire/ business continuity (BC) assessment for significant improvements to staff training, including the provision of a firefighting response team made up from staff employed on site (almost a retained works brigade).

The fire service college has been identified as one potential supplier of an initial course, but the customer requires quarterly top up courses. Locating the top ups near to the London area would reduce staff down time and be rather more cost effective than the FSC

Sorry I can be more explicit, but you will understand the need for commercial sensitivity when it comes to discussing BC matters publicly

Not sure if they still do, but Anglian fire (or something like that!) based in Essex used to use real fires for FE training a couple of years ago. When I get into work in the morning I'll try a find the contact details.

Messey will the local fire services training establishments not design a course for you?

I know its too far but I believe Merseyside FRS will do.

Nautical colleges undertake live fire training - required by the STCW Convention for all seafarers.

Nearest to London is Warsash, near Southampton. I am sure that they would be able to put on a specific course for you.

Airport Fire Services still use real fire and usually sell courses outside of the airport community, for example - http://www.gatwickfire.com/

Thanks to all. Your kind suggestions have given me some interesting avenues to explore

Chris: London's Fire Brigade never did provide hot or real fire training for non fire service customers. In any case, they closed their commercial training unit almost exactly a year ago to make way for a PFI contract with Babcock (just been agreed) which will see virtually all of the LFB's training outsourced!!
