Hi, does anyone have information or guidance on inspection frequency for various types of FIXED platforms and access / egress type gantries. These platforms are from knee height to 20 metres above the working area and are use for escape routes access to plant and work equipment also passage from one area to another over moving machinery. I was lead to believe an annual inspection should take place or if in high risk or corrosive environment this maybe increased on the risk of corrosion. Many thanks Mark

I am not aware of any defined structural integrity inspection period for fixed platforms and related structures. So it will come down to the individual risk assessment criteria of the "competent person", as qualified by such matters as the original design life of the structure (if known), its age (if known), its physical environment, and any structural alteration, modification, or damage. Failure of a 20m platform, or of any of its related protection, will have dire consequences, and such that I would consider at least a 6 monthly inspection programme to be more appropriate. Remembering that a scaffold platform (being a temporary platform) on a construction site is required to be inspected at least every 7 days!

Like farm I am not aware of any guidance on inspection frequency. How are these platforms constructed? I have seen some internal "walk ways" that are steel frame construction similar to the building itself which I would consider need very little inspection just like the fabric of the building in most situations. However if you add in other factors such as FLT movement which could damage the supports, or as you say Mark corrosive atmospheres or you are talking about a much lighter weight construction then inspection frequency will increase. Dare I say that its probably down to risk assessment?

We inspect every six months (corrosive chemicals in the area).

Many thanks Guys, In my previous roles we ensured an annual inspection was carried out however we didn't have as many as I now have... So as I discussed the inspection frequency with the engineering department they pointed out that some form of inspection is carried out every 8 years which i felt was far too long. I guess I'll need to push them on a risk assessment review. Rgds Mark

If it's any help mobile work equipment used for lifting people must be inspected every six months. I would consider this to be a minimum depending upon exposur eto conditions likley to cause any deterioration of condition. Steve
