Our MD has decided to bulk buy screen wash for the company vehicles. It means about 4000 litres of screen wash that is 20% alcohol & classified as highly flammable.

How can we store this & why don’t B&Q / Halfords have to use fire proof containers in their shops as they have this plus paints, white spirits etc? Also is 20% alcohol highly flammable? It's not much stronger than a bottle of red wine.

That's the same strength as a nice bottle of port.

I'd expect its something to do with quantities on the display shelf, also bear in mind storage in back of house, fire risk assessment, detection, sprinkler, containment etc?

Malcolm,

What size containers is it in and how many vehicles is it for?

Do you have definitive information from the supplier, which should include instructions for safe use, storage and disposal? I can't honestly see this stuff having a flash point to merit a "highly flammable" tag!

I suspect the alcohol content is considered highly flammable

400 vehicles, 10 litres each in 5 litre tubs.

COSHH data sheet says 'Store away from food & drink' but later gives it a risk phrase R11: Highly Flammable.

I have a Sypol assessment that says the same.

Sorry, had a control error.

What I was trying to say was it is unlikely the screen wash will catch alight if exposed to naked a flame. That doesn't mean it won't start to give of flammable vapours at relativley low temperature 'though.

Are you certain the R11 is referring to the mixture and not just the alcohol component? Sometimes msds are written so that this isn't completely clear. Which sections does the R11 appear in?

I just had a quick browse of MSDS available on Google. Some of these products are 90% ethanol!

Those with % similar to those mentioned by the poster quote flash points around 30 -35 degrees C.
As I recall that's above the "highly flammable" range, but is within "flammable" range.

To cut to the chase though, in these difficult times, is it advisable to tie up capital in such a bulk purchase when there are any number of local motor factors out there who would bite your hand off for a "just in time" contract for these consumables? There is an obvious risk-based safety argument to take back to the MD here.

Personally I don't see any great risk in keeping two tubs in each vehicle? That solves the storage issue and means it's available for use when required.
