Hi,

I have a decision to make for 2012 which is whether to go down 18001 route or British Safety Council 5 Star Audit Route.

Anyone any opinions or advice on which would be better ?

Cheers

I'd recommend BOTH as they do cover different things, and the BSC have a combined audit which my main customer now has every year.

They've gone from 2-star to 4-star in three years and went for the combined this year. Good to see high scores in certain areas. The combined audit has led to more documentation with regard to contractors and permits to work etc but worthwhile.

Combined audit, there's a link on BSC Five Star webpage.

Hi
Depends on what you mean by 'better'. Better for improving H&S standards or better in terms of what it might tell customers about your H&S standards? I don't know much about the BSC process but I do think that OHSAS 18001 has wider recognition including outside the UK. Therefore, if you're in a supply chain perhaps 18001 will be a better option. If you have or intend to go for ISO 9000 or 14000 series then you'll find a common language & process with 18001.

For us the decision was to go for 18001 as this is more widely recognised but the 5* has its merits....

18001. widely recognised and of real value if certified by an acreditted body such as BSi, BSC, Lloyds etc but it is just a pass/fail. Difficult to demonstrate to the outside world that you are getting better.

BSC 5*, perhaps not so widely recognised outside the H&S world but does allow you to demonstrate improvement as you go up towards the full 5*.

I would suggest getting 18001 and maintaining it then using 5* to ramp up the standard.

BSC are not UKAS accredited to audit against 18001. There certification states '......... after having completed an audit by British Safety Council has fulfilled the requirements of BS OHSAS 18001 :2007' We have checked with them and they say they are looking into getting accreditation.

Thanks for your replies guys. We are not really looking at customer or tender processes. The main aim to to kick start an improvement process for SMS and to improve safety performance of the business. I want a proper external assessment of what we have in order to help drive the improvement process and provide external opinion to management team of were we need to focus and invest.

This is why i'm leaning towards BS 5* process ahead of 18001 as from what i've read 18001 does not help us in any direction or stragety and focus is purely on documented systems. I could be wrong, this is only from my google searches and reading. I'm thinking if we can achieve a certain level within BS 5* process it would be an indication that we could look towards 18001 while going towards 5* status.

In summary it not necessarily a badge i'm looking for but more assistance on working towards a better strategy and MS.

Cheers

Safetyman2010, if you're not looking for a badge, there are many consultants who will work with you at a strategic and operational level to achieve progress. The external expert view is often perceived to be of greater authority than an internal view, particularly if the chosen consultant is recognised as an expert and charges commensurate fees.

ISO has instant recognition, common safety language, whereas BSC may not have the same impact being more localised. Decision is greatly influenced by your needs and budget.
