I have been asked to put a PVC fly sreen in front of a final exit door it is the walk through type. The reason is when the door is open cold air is coming in. The door opens into the garden area and clients go out to smoke in that area.I was concerned because when have some cleints who have difficulty walking and this could hinder their escape if we had a fire . What is your take on this Kev

PVC strip curtains are used in the food manufacturing business on exit doors and emergency escapes for donkeys years. IMHO they will do nothing to keep out the wind but they will fly around and annoy people. Can you not make people close the door behind them?

A fire door should always be kept shut any way to make sure of sufficient compartmentation etc... I would suggest investing in a door closing mechanism that will close the door behind these unruley types. I have ahad a mechanical system instal previously that automatically shuts the door behind persons.

"Fire Doors" need to be kept shut, there is no such requirements for "Fire Exits" (with few exceptions).

Note - Poster says final exit door - this might have need to remain open in an evacuation - I'm not going to volunteer to stand and hold it open for too long :) I agree with first post - move smoking shelter - ban use of final exit door for access / egress? I think we need a little more information on if it's a final exit door from a compartment luike a stair well / or just a door etc? hmm is it Friday yet?

Good spot, I was sitting in front of our final exit door just before posting my comment (which is a fire door) so I just assumed. I still thinnk with secuirity issues, the door shoudl be equiped with a self closer of some sorts.

:) No worries - I have jumped to conclusions many times, I don't have time to read all posts and no time to proof read replies :) I didn't mean to pick fault, just ensure original poster had correct info. It must be Friday soon!

Thanks guys I have tried and tried to get people to shut this door behind them. The door opens onto a steel gantry then down four steps onto the garden area. I have seen these on exit doors before just not sure if it was ok to use them in a care home looks unsightly but A O I don't own it just work here,

If it is a final exit door it does not require to be shut but quite the opposite. It is acceptable to use a fire exit to access a garden etc. unless security is an issue. I don't recommend a self closer on a fire exit as that would mean the door may start to close on people who are evacuating in a hurry. Oh for the facility to put photos on this forum, then we could all see the fly screen and make a proper recommendation. In the absence of that I say it is up to your fire risk assessor to review the assessment because something has changed. Then decide if OK or otherwise.
