Has anyone got any ideas on what could be considered as leading KPI's specifically for Process Safety?

There are also many ideas in this US-based reference: http://www.aiche.org/upl...ocessSafety2011_2-24.pdf

I have aproblem with KpIs in that they are often identified at narrow areas of attainment. A KPI for me in Safety is to reduce the number of accidents overall and to reduce negative costs. Measuring that is very difficult!

In line with Steve above - I'm trying to broaden it out so that they describe the bottom line - Work days lost, personal injury claims lodged, cost of replacing equipment / production. Keep it simple and go for pound notes if possible!

Disagree with the use of lagging indicators; these merely state how good you were rather than how good you are. You need to recognise good attitudes, for example deployment of certain safety activities, like safety tours etc. but these need to be clearly measurable I would say stay away from accident stats, this will lead to a culture of under reporting, especially if bonus linked and will destroy creditability of your programme when questions start to be asked.

There is nothing wrong with using KPIs if they are used properly. They are not intended as a picture to the workforce of how well your company has performed, they are a lagging indicator to management as to how well thier controls are working and can indicate when and where additional attention is required. They should be used with care so as not to get you into a false position as they are only historical data and must be remembered as such.

Agree with Bob, KPIs are bottom line management info, and even better when trends are introduced to show if performance is improving or not. They should wherever possible be used with extra indicators such as proactive inspections etc, to get the complete picture.
