I have just started at a company that are bogged down with every type of risk assessment, they have completed manual handling risk assessments for each task on site. But these are individually reviewed separately from the general risk assessment for that task. At my last company we did the MH risk assessments separately but listed the hazards / control measures on the general, the question is am I compliant doing it this way ?

I am a manual handling instructor i have always carried out a generic risk assessment for the designated area and where a more specific risk assessment is required IE COSHH, DSE or Manual handling then a note is made to that effect and the bespoke assessment is carried out. However before the bespoke can be carried ie for Manual handling a criteria must met for me it * Distance over 10m * weight over 16kg/25kg just an example to ensure i am not going over the top with complexity which may be covered in the generic RA. I don`t think you are in breach as you are providing the detail required all be it on two different sheets and you are reviewing it at the expiry period or should something change. However i would say you are making it overly complicated for auditing and when both sheets may become separated ie end up in different depts. When it comes to a review just carry out your normal process I am no authority by any chalk, but if i make ref to the Löfstedt review; simpler it is the more likelihood it will be carried out correctly I just use a coding system to link it to the main RA so its easy to find on a computer Hope these words of wisdom will help P

Have you tried using the HSE "MAC" tool, downloaded from HSE website www.hse.gov.uk. Where significant risks are identified by the tool (traffic light system (red, amber etc), then a more detailed assessments should be carried out. As this tool was originally designed for us as Inspectors, to quantify manual handling risks, you know its going to be in line with enforcement expectations. Similar to Paul's suggestions but a more simplified approach.

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking whether integrating risk assessments that address general risks and specific risks is OK. The answer is yes, if the HSE worked examples are anything to go by. See http://www.hse.gov.uk/risk/casestudies/index.htm
