I have been asked to look at edge protection for high level pallet gates in a warehouse. The gates allow access for pallets and wheeled bins. I have updated the procedure to ensure bin wheels are locked when the gate is open to the drop but have been told to source some form of edge protection to stop the bins from falling should the brakes fail or not be applied. The edge would need to be approx 20mm high. This I feel would then lead to a possible issue when removing pallets in that they could catch on the raised edge and fall from the forks. Any suggestions or comments very welcome. Thanks

We have a see-saw gate on our mezz, see link http://www.askactive.com...zanine-floors/load-gates Let me know if you need to know who supplied ours. Simple and effective

A gentle gradient ramp at the unloading point would at least encourage wayward bins to roll back against the safety gate and should be within the limits of adjustment of the forks on most FLTs for pallet off-load?

Thanks. We have gates in place but found that people were leaving the bins in with the gate open to the edge and no brakes on. Having re-written the risk assessments and policy it has been decided that in addition to new procedures we need some way of stopping bins etc falling off the edge with the gates in the open to edge position. Belt and braces approach really as we were picked up on it during a recent inspection.

We have a similar system within our warehouses which works well. 1 person on the mezzanine level who swings the gate open to allow the FLT to load the pallet into the mezzanine then swings the gate back to it's closed position to move / work the pallet within the mezzanine. Total time the pallet is left with an "open" edge is minimal and always under supervision. We don't have wheelie bins though, but the system should work the same.

Martin, We had a similair concern with the wheelie bins so we actually manufactered a frame/fork sleves that it sat on the to the right height so as not to create a issue when placing into the lifting section of the compactor, this means that it is transported around higher floor levels with a pump truck and lifted with he FLT, which works well and is more efficient for our process win win in our case. we only use 2 bins though
