I am looking into the effects of voice picking systems with computer generated voice instrcutions to users through headsets. This technology is being introduced in many areas of the logistsics industry. My primary interest is in the noise generated directly to the ear of the user, currently the manufacturer is suprised at my request for data related to noise. Is there experience of this technology amongest other practitioners? Patrick Kavanagh Thames Valley Branch

Patrick, we took on board voice picking/selection process 2 years ago, our system installer provided us with a very detailed information pack and also how to regulate the level to ear, we also looked at hygiene issuse with these units, eg clensing wipes for use following breaks, replacement foams, clean area for storage etc, i conducted a very detailed assessment with a variety of control measures implemented, I also asked our local EHO on a site visit of their experience of these types of units and assoiacted risks, bearing in mind they visit lots of different sites where these systems were in use. Basically they said our approach was OTT compared with other companies. however we have still stayed with the findings of the R/A.
