My present supervisors Gold card is up for renewal so decided to apply for a construction H&S black card, as I have been a manager with a PC for several years. Checked their web site and spoke to them to confirm that the only evidence they will accept is an NVQ 4. Neither Nebosh cert's or diploma's, university degree's' or master's, or any thing else is acceptable. You can be profiled at a cost of £300 to see if you are acceptable. Surely 10+ years as a H&S adviser, 3+ years as a manager, various NEBOSH certificates, a Diploma and a Master's in H&S has to equate to sufficient evidence that I am competent. Rant over, feeling better. Now back to work. Anyone any views?

If you are chartered you can apply for a professionally qualified persons card , no idea what colour it is, provided you have passed the relevant health and safety test in the last 2 years. Yul

Hi Animal, if you have a masters e.g. any postgraduate qualification and a member of a chartered body e.g. IOSH as an example you will be eligible for a black card (H&S Manager). I suggest you speak to one of the supervisors/managers at CSCS. Any probs, give me a PM and I'll try to help.

there are a few routes; 1. NVQ Level 4 2. If you have a degree 3 or if you have membership to a governing body or institute I rang CSkills yesterday, with regard to a QS who wants his card renewed, and the above is what I was informed. With regard to the NVQ route, you can get part funding on the matter.

With respect to the routes given above, I would caveat number 2 with the fact that it needs to be a degree that's logged in the system - we have people with degrees from EC universities that aren't recognised by CSCS (unless you pay them hundreds of pounds to validate it). You also need to qualify number 3 with the requirement that the body or institution needs to be one that they recognise - we have some very expert, very qualified technical people that none-the-less are on 'visitor ' (ie, unskilled) cards because CSCS does not recognise their qualification. So, I have several postgraduate qualified people, some with professional institution recognition, who are on 'visitor' cards. It's mostly people who qualified elsewhere in the EC and technical specialists (my rock geologists, for example, are on visitor cards, though most of the geotechnics engineers are PQP).
