I would appreciate the views of those with competence in this topic on the following:-
What is the concensus on the continued use of P3 filters used for asbestos removal on full & half-mask non-disposable respirators? Should they be retained after having transited the shower and re-used the next day/shift; or should they be diposed of at end of shift?
Please do not just give me chapter & verse of CoSHH etc without identifying the relevance to the question.
I shall await all responses with great anticipation.

Good Morning, I have just asked this question to our Asbestos Officer at our local Autority. His response was that yes they can be re-used, it depends on exposure and the environmental conditions. The contractor should monitor exposure levels and will be aware when filters need changing.

He also mentioned that there should be a cover placed over the filters whilst decontamination is occuring!

Hope this is of help and puts your mind at rest?

Regards

Andy.

Yes, P3 filters can be re-used but it is all down to how well the asbestos work is supervised. The operative may re-use but it is imperative that the filter is capped when showering. The asbestos supervisor must ensure that the conditions where the filter is being used are correctly monitored and that stated control measures are being adhered to and remain effective throughout. The operative must be conversant in the decontamination procedures and know when their filter needs to be changed. Effective training and supervision should address this. P3 Filters are robust and designed for more than single use provided the asbestos work is well controlled and decon procedures are followed. P3 filters can be used over a number of shifts/ days as long as they are used correctly as stated.

Hi, I have no issues about our operatives using a filter twice in a day. However, remember that when we are wet stripping (asbestos) it will likely affect the efficiency of that filter, the same sort of things happen with the pre filters on the air movers (NPUs), hence why I encourage our people to change filters.
