Anybody knows of any courses on the safe manual handling of live animals, such as sheep and goats, in the York area?

Your Local Trading Standards people have responsibility for animal welfare and may be able to point you in a suitable direction.

I'm willing to be corrected, but can't imagine you will find a course without commisioning it especially for your own needs. Out of interest why are you interested in such a course?

You could try contacting the RSPCA or your local Fire & Rescue Service as they will need to train staff on large animal handling / rescue. They may be willing to provide you with details of who trains their staff.

By the nature of their work vets have to handle all sorts of animals, sometimes in highly intimate ways, so it might be worthwhile contacting a few veterinary schools for advice. Also, try farmers and livestock auction operators.
p.s. Having first seen this topic after response #2 was added, I couldn't help smiling at its content. However, despite my Pythonesque strain of humour, I couldn't think of any suitably ribald responses to make, so you'll have to make do with my serious suggestions above! ;-)

We work with vets and they are the most awkward bunch of ... it has been my misfortune to deal with! They never follow set procedures and think they know it all, (at least the ones I have dealt with)
The reason I would like to look at the training is because in our line of work our people sometimes had to manhandle animals, actually.
Thanks for the sensible suggestions by the way. I'll follow them up
