I am just after some opinions, we current prohibit eating in our factory assembly area. The risk of ingestion of smell parts or chemicals is very real.
However we have a number of people recently pushing on this as we allow because our Stores (just a partition to separate from assembly> are permitted to eat at their desks in a open office style area.
The risk of ingestion of chemicals is (other than tipex) negligible but on occasion parts will be brought to their desks if they are investigating something.
Would I be justified in prohibiting eating in this area as well, or would this be more of a local policy issue than an Health and Safety issue.

There are any number of issues and arguments one could posit, but ultimately any "rules" have to be seen to be fair and transparent.
Presumably there are adequate welfare facilities in good proximity with adequate time for rest breaks (as opposed to spending 12 minutes of a 15 minute break waiting for my turn at the tea urn etc.
If facilities are in all respects adequate, then extending the rule to the stores area is reasonable - but the reasons are likely to be about fairness, not health, safety or welfare.
Unless there are other contamination risks of your final product being packaged along with the remains of someone's sandwich!
