RIDDOR question - Time gap between accident and absence?

Hi everyone,
I'm almost embarrassed to pose this question but any help would be appreciated!
Small ladder extension section falls and strikes a glancing blow to an employee head and they suffer a minor bump/cut to their head. Subsequently their eyelid drops so off they go to the GP's who in turn refers them to specialist doctors. The up shot is that some nerve damage is diagnosed in their neck as a result of them pulling/jerking their head out of the way of the falling ladder section and the person is signed off for 4 weeks. There is over a month between the date of the accident and them going off sick.
Is this an over 3 day reportable injury...
I would have spoken to the incident centre, but can't as it doesn't take calls of this nature any more...
Many thanks!

I would say that it is still a reportable injury. The basis for this is that on the day of the accident, records (i.e accident book entry) etc will have be evidence of the accident occurring within the workplace.
As the incident could be linked to the resulting injury, which then prevents the injured party from being at work, this should be reported, as all the available evidence will show and accident occurred, a person was referred for medical attention and in the ensuing weeks thereafter the injury manifested itself to an extent where the IP could not attend work.
However, consideration should also be given and the IP consulted as to whether the injury affects their normal day-to-day job, or whether a different job can be given on a temporary basis which can allow the IP to come to work.
This is by no means an attempt to disguise or prevent a Reportable injury, but to give the IP the support of the business to come to work, as in some cases from experience, people take time off as they couldn't fulfil their normal role, however had another role be offered temporarily whilst they recovered, they would welcome the opportunity to return to work.

My opinion...
A work-related accident happened - the OP doesn't seem to be questioning the truth of the accident, so whether it's in the AB or not is a bit of a sideline (from the point of view of whether it's a RIDDOR, obviously it's important for other reasons!)
The IP is going to be unfit for normal duties for a period of more than three days not including the day of the accident. The unfitness-for-duty is a result of the accident, as far as best medical evidence shows.
It's a RIDDOR three-dayer. The gap between the absence and the accident is irrelevant.

Just to stir the pot ...
Could you clarify what you mean by 'subsequently'.
I would want to establish that it was a direct consequence of work.

I have had many similar situations re time spans between date of incident & no time lost for a period of time, usually associated with MSD's, e.g. IP hurts back moving something; trys valiantly to "work it off"; fails & is then forced to take time off.
Accordingly, in my opinion, if they are then off for > 3 days (soon to be 7!), then it is reportable.
