Hi Does anybody have any views on lifting a completed scaffold using lifting gear? Scenario is this a tower scaffold is built to gain access to a work station at 6mtrs in height when the work on the unit is complete the scaffold requires to be moved in order to move the unit to the next stage of fabrication. Another unit is put in place and the scaffold is put back in place using an overhead crane. The scaffold is re inspected and the scaff tag reinstated. The scaffold is never lifted more than a minimal height and moved a minimal distance. The scaffold is lifted by the standards with re inforcement at the joints. I would view this as any lifting operation i.e. load to be lifted must be assessed, a safe system of work developed and a lift plan put in place. Any views, comments, observations welcome

This method is used more often than you think (shoreside during shipyard phases). If the lift plan is compiled in accordance with LOLER and the scaffold is reinspected after the lift with the details recorded on tag then what is the issue? Some would argue that there is a risk of the individual not inspecting the scaffold as diligently as required perhaps however if you have confidence in your SMS and safety culture then your third party screening should be of such a standard to negate that risk.
