As you may know the Leveson inquiry is looking into how the press conducts itself following the illegal phone hacking revelations. The editor of the Daily Mail [Paul Dacre: salary over £1 million allegedly] was giving evidence recently. An article in the Guardian [7th February] on his evidence - sub heading 'Dacre outlines vision for journalistic respectability' - contained the following quote: 'Dacre reserved the most forceful side of his personality for the issue of the importance of the press to society. He said his paper had written hundreds and thousands of stories and the inquiry was alighting on a few negative examples. The British public were being given "a very bleak, one-sided view" of an industry that employs thousands.' I know just how he feels. We're in an industry that saves hundreds and thousands of lives and improves the health, safety and business performance for organisations that employ millions. As Mr R Littlejohn [salary £800,000 allegedly] might be tempted to observe - you couldn't make it up! Cheers. Nigel

Good point, Nigel. But wish there was a better industry we could twin ourselves with. And empathising with Dacre makes me queasy.

Nigel The hypocrisy had not escaped my notice either. Indeed, as an industry we are vilified by the PM, the press and other so-called responsible organisations. Meanwhile, all manner of illegal and insidious practices are allegedly taking place in society and industry - yet we are the 'Monster'!

Littlejohn and the like will continue with comments such as 'you couldn't make it up' and sadly joined on the bandwagon by the PM with very bleak and one sided views that paints such a negative picture of health and safety. Nothing is ever their fault though!
