Afternoon all,

Just wondering what you all think of this?

http://uk.myzoneglobal.com/faqs.php

I personally think it is a joke. Yes there are accidents daily, yes they are resultant from daydreaming, but come on, a buzzer/ vibration going off in your ears all day long. In construction there is constant hazards, so shall this buzzer go off all day? In ones ears?

I think more awareness is a better route.

IMO, if you are relying on this system, then the actual health and safety management system has failed!

Whatever happened to Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work?

It gets better, the bit on your hat is the reciever but you have to affix a transmitter to every moving hazard! What a joke.

Having had a quick look at the website I can see a lot of practical applications of this - particularly if working in a noisy environment. Many forklifts, slow moving equipment etc have sirens fitted for reversing but these are not much use if someone is wearing ear protection.

I accept that there are numerous hazards in a variety of workplaces but used properly in the right environment then there would be benefits to it.

I would disagree that this system indicates a failure of health and safety management systems - using that argument then we could say the same about flashing lights, hard hats, PPE etc.

It would obviously be used as an integral part of a safety management system and if I came across a company who were prepared to invest and utilise such a system then I would be willing to bet that they are probably more safety conscious than most.

FH, I just dont agree that construction sites are the best place for this. You would have to put the transmitter onto everything, every delivery vehicle, every piece of plant, every item being lifted, and then there is the cost of such transmitters/recievers. How robust are they?

I could go on. But I think that the best way forward is to remind the opertives it is a construction site, there are going to be hazards everywhere.

But this is just my view.

It all boils down to what extent are employers obliged to remove or reduce risks. It reminds me of a lively meeting some years ago where I said: "Next, the guys will be wearing a hard hat with a amber flashing light on top"! Hmm, be careful what you wish for...

Have to say I'm not sure about use on building sites due to variety of vehicles, sub contractors etc etc. But the little animation in a warehouse looked quite interesting. Apply first principles obviously so segregation at top of list, but sometimes limited pedestrian access is still needed. A problem with reversing alarms and the like is that people become so used to them they just become part of the background noise, I can see this system may have some merit. Would need to fit into something other than a hard hat mind you. Its an interesting product that I think is worth more investigation in some circumstances.

If you take a couple of minutes to consider this there are some good practical applications for this system.

The mistake would be to implement it across an entire site with warnings buzzing from the time you step through the gate. If there are a few potential high risk areas though this would be ideal, especially where cranes or unseen vehicle movements may occur.

The application would need to be specific and other risks assessed but it's got legs.

It would appear that some major players are taking it seriously...
