Is anyone aware if there is any specific guidance for eye protection whilst carryingout oxy/propane cutting operations? I am aware that EN166 is required but is the wearing of shaded visors/goggles etc required or is a suitable clear visor/goggle acceptable?

In my previous career as a steel erector, i used shaded goggles with 'flip ups' for tasks requiring oxy/acetylene and clear ones for grinding/cleaning up. Not sure of specific guidance, maybe just best practice with it being a 'bright light' when burning.

Here's a link showing both types. One for grinding/fettling, one for welding/cutting.

Hi Sappers,

EN166 is only part of the standard. There will be accompanying letters to follow, which designate the impact type, ie; if they are suitable welding/grinding etc.

I may have a copy of the standard somehere I can dig out if need be, but you should be able to get the different specs off any decent supplier. I think the big one beginning with "A" and based in Hull may have it on their website.

Failing that check this link, found it by googling EN166!

If you can't find what you are after, PM me and I'll dig out the full Standard if I can find it.

Eye protection
For standard work consider BE EN 166F
where impact may take place BS EN 166B

The British standard that applie to your welding face screen is BS EN 679:1989

It appears from Clive's link it might be EN169 shade 5 - 7 for Oxy cutting.

No, clear visor/goggles are not acceptable, if only from the point of view that the person using the gear won't be able to see what they are cutting so won't have full control of the operation.

The goggles, as said earlier, should have shade 5-7 (operators preference)

Your choice of PPE should also take into account what you are cutting i.e. steelwork with lead based paint. This may lead you to look at Respiratory protection as well.
