Afternoon,

Does anybody have any information regarding Lightning Protection, specifically for warehouse buildings. I am aware of BS 62305, however would appreciate a simple guide of what we are obliged to do, and how best to achieve protection from lightning. i.e. frequency, competence, requirements etc. Many thanks.

PH04, the need for lightning protection is decided (isn't it always?) by risk assessment, the methodology for which is contained within BS EN 62305. 6651 is the old standard.

For a bog standard warehouse building in most of UK that is neither architecturally nor strategicaly valuable nor an isolated exposed structure nor containing particularly delicate or high value contents or extremely flammable there is probably no need.

I am not aware of any legal requirements for warehouses to be so protected but am happy to be corrected if wrong. Business risk management will probably be the driver as to whether protection is fitted.

To busy for a real answer

but check out http://www.furse.com/ps/eel/?b=furse

I did the exercise as the standard swapped - under 6651 it was relatively straight forward - under 62305 it isn't :)

Good luck.

Sorry to resurrect this but I'm looking for a bit of advice.

A local supplier is touting for business to 'test and inspect' the lightning protection system at our premises. I am unaware of the existence of such 'system' and presume, if it does indeed exist, that it is well hidden within the fabric of the building.

Does anyone have access to the standard (BS62305:2006) and/or have the requisite knowledge to confirm what might be required of us regarding periodic test and maintenance of such an installed system.

Am not averse to chucking £150 at these people if there is a real need for us to have such system inspected periodically but I'm also aware that some sharp practices and unscrupulous traders can see businesses spending money on 'services' that are not genuinely necessary.

Thanks for any help.
