Hi all I have been asked to provide fire risk assessments & safety advise for a private firm on a casual basis (I am fully qualified & competent by the way) do I need to register on the Consultants Register? Patrick

Patrick, The Consultant's register is voluntary - if the organisation you are due to work for is happy with your competence, then there is no need for you to register unless you want to (and of course meet the relevant criteria!!!) Helena

The short answer is 'NO'. There is no legal requirements to do so. You will of course get lots of others hand wringing and tutting if you don't, saying its a badge of competence, commitment etc. All a matter of opinion. Many people report no additional work etc generated by being registered. I take the view, that if you do consider yourself competent to do the work that you have been asked to do, and are happy that if asked, that you can demonstrate your competence - then being registered makes no difference. Just because you are on a register means very little, in my view, as regards your competence. When I have spare work via my own consultancy, I use people I know and trust and have a proven track record.

Why bother? The register only demonstrates that you have acquired the relevant qualifications. It does not confirm that you are competent in any one particular aspect of occupational safety and health. The client must still assure themself that you are competent in the particular area on which they require advice. The register does not cater for those with specific skills and competence in just one area of health and safety. I do not qualify to be on the register, but I challenge anyone to demonstrate that in my particular area of expertise I am not competent. Indeed, quite a lot of my work comes from qualified health and safety practitioners who are on the register but recognise that they need help in my particular aspect. Chris

Fire RA competence is a very hot topic at the moment. Although you may not feel it necessary to register for the IOSH consultants register, I wouldn't carry out work of this type without being on a fire safety register, IFE / Warrington or other.

I am interested in why you (pgaudi) say this. The various fire registers are also voluntary and carry about the same weight as the HSE Consultants register: not much in my opinion. Competency in our profession does not (yet) require enrolment on any of these registers.

I looked at the Consultants register criteria and found I do not qualify I have the NGC and worked as a Production Manager on a Top tier COMAH site until 2 years ago I wrote SWPs ,carried out RAs ,accident investigations, inspections and Audits as part of my duties Previously I was a Union appointed Safety Rep and have attended many H/S courses with the Union and in house courses with my old firm. For the past two years I have worked as an H/S Advisor for a very large group of Care Homes.(quite a change) All in all I have in excess of 20 years H/S experience. I recently attended the Nebosh Fire Cert course where I met a person who holds the diploma and he told that the Diploma did not cover Fire with as much depth as the Certificate course did which I found surprising. I am attending a Nebosh Environmental Cert course soon and I presume that it will cover the subject in more depth than the Diploma as well unless someone tells me otherwise. I also have Train the trainer Manual Handling Certificate. Seems strange to me that with my many years practical H/S experience on a top tier COMAH ,4 certificate level qualifications(if I pass )in H/S I would not be deemed competent to be a Consultant on this register. I would love to have the finance and time to do the Diploma but that is currently not an option!
