I am currently putting together three lifting teams including AP (A61) Crane Supervisor (A62) Operator (A17D/A66a) and Slinger/Signaller (A40). My question is can the Machine/Crane Operator also be the Crane supervisor. (So the site team can be two rather than three) If anyone can direct me to specific guidance or information on this matter it would be much appreciated. Rob H

I dont see what not if he/she is trained and CPCS'd to do so. But is it not a 4 man team, AP, CS, Op and S/S ??? AP and CS are two different titles.

I know the AP and CS ate different but by 'site lifting team' I meant who actually has to be on site at the time of lifting. The AP does not have to be present when lifting. So the Crane Operator would also be the CS then a SS giving a 'Site Team' of Two.

Rob I can appreciate by your posts that you are aware of the requirements of having a properly trained team. BS7121 part 1 will answer your question no not Lift Supervisor and Crane Operator. It is a sticky one because the CPA were advocating at one time that for a basic lift the Crane Op could also be the supervisor and Slinger. My opinion is the same as the best practice guide Basic Lifts CS and SS but the Crane Op is the Crane Op and that is all he should do. This is based on the fact of WAH up and down from his cab all the time. And will he always be in control if he is in the cab whilst the lift is taking place. I do work for aq large mobile crane company and we have the teams you are talking about but we would never allow a Crane Op to be the Crane Supervisor for any lift. Regards Alex

Thanks Alex Good Information, Not sure if you have ever used a MRT 2150 or similar, this is basically a telehandler with a 360 slew weighing around 5t. Some main contractors now deem this as a crane, and insist on all the planning that comes with a lift plan. Do you think the lift supervisor cant be the operator due to the proximity he is to the works ? Would this machine come under BS7121 as the CPCS Category is A17 Endorsement D Telescopic Handler. I take your point on lifting with a mobile crane and am agreement but am unsure on this particular machine if its the same procedure? Thanks again for your feed back and if you have any more information on the 360 it would be appreciated.

Rob There may be better people out there to answer this as I have never used them. But if it has a Safe Load Indicator and can lift over 1 Ton then the PC can ask for what he wants. It is out of my comfort zone so would not like to comment on the Operator being the CS sorry. Regards Alex

Alex Thanks for the Information and I have a feeling you are correct that the ball is in the PCs court regarding the specifics on this issue. Regards Rob H
