Hi all, my company is integrating with three new companies, i.e. we are moving forward as one brand, one market, one company with offices all over the globe. UK law doesn't apply in all of the countries, I have access to OSHA regulations and my colleagues in Indonesia are keen to improve their safety systems, they help me lot with the regulations there. It is my intention to work towards UK standards, this will of course take time to achieve. I have established H&S champions in different countries but it is not officially part of their remit as yet. I am currently reviewing our safety policy, collating all the relevant data such as the number of accidents in the last 2-3 years, training program, risk assessment model etc. The challenge is to bring all of this under one umbrella. I would also like to create and introduce a global H&S committe.
I would be grateful for any advice and direction you are able to offer. Many thanks

In the absence of a response I will comment, most multi-national organisations based in the UK use the same HSQE systems in other parts of the world. How rigidly they are applied is a moot point. However, if you comply with UK/EU laws then you will almost certainly comply with foreign countries h&s laws. That said, you will still need to do some homework on what other countries specifically require which may not be part of the normal UK/EU policies and practices. How you achieve consistency across the board I could not say, except I believe you are thinking on the right lines.

Hi Lloy,
looking at something similar myself. Could you share with me what your proposed H&S org structure (chart) looks like so I can glean some idea on what resources of qualified H&S employees are required at each site / country? or if you are planning to outsource H&S to a management company.

There have been some good answers given already and my basic 2 pennies worth here is that if you stick to common sense, logic, setting yourself achievable targets and base principals you will not go far wrong as these ideas etc. apply all over the world

We developed our own minimum requirements. Simple and HS(G) 65 based but not UK legislation based. We instructed business to comply with these requirements at the absolute minimum. If business want a hand developing a policy then fine but in general local requirements (the local policy/arrangements) should be developed as businesses see fit; to suit local requirements and culture rather then thrusting something upon them. Let them have the freedom to get on with it but with the understanding that they would be audited annually against the minimum requirements.

We also put a strong emphasis on leadership.

Think carefully about a global H&S committee, is it simply a talking shop for safety people to waffle - sorry, share good practice? - there is no legal requirement and it could annoy people as an expensive waste of time if approached incorrectly, instead would leadership be better involved in some kind of regular update on performance and discussion as part of the highest level management meeting?

Hi all, thank you for your messages. I am establishing champions at different sites around the globe, the challenge is that H&S is not part of their objectives but I am also including wellbeing initiatives as a sweetner. Our office in Italy has just had a wellbeing day which I championed from here and publicised on our intranet, thankfully I have a small budget and if it is not sufficient I speak to the HR Reward team to help out, so we are on the right track.

At the moment I am relying on staff and managers to manage H&S at a local level and to report in accidents, nearmisses, risk assessments, all the usual stuff.

My IT department has now introduced a "Knowlege Tree" which was designed to share folders/docs, all of this is held centrally for all staff globally, so I'll be tapping into this initiative to share PTW/RA forms etc etc.
