Hi My company has a large number (2000+) of karabiners in circulationamongst a large workfoce, some of which will be used daily and some never, with most in between. All our harnesses, lanyards etc are serial numbered at manufacture - karabiners aren't. Inspection regimes are in place for all the webbing items - OK so far. Our problem is inspection of the karabiner and how to prove/record it, since they are all identical. I have spoken to, and checked websites of, several major manufacturers - all say they need to be inspected but don't suggest how the karabiner should be identified so that the inspection can be recorded. We have considered loose key tags, but these could easily move between otherwise identical karabiners. Marker pen will rub off. Stamping is not allowed - could damage the item. Does anybody have any ideas/systems already in place to allow foolproof traceability? thanks!

You can get karabiners that are serial numbered, all of mine had a unique serial number stamped into the body during manufacture. Alternatively, you could do what I had to do to hydraulic hoses that had to be uniquely identifiable; Use white heatshrink tubing that you can write on that is close in size to the body of the clip. Slip it on and shrink it down with a hot air gun. Write a unique identifier on it and then protect it with clear heat shrink tubing. I'm afraid I've no idea where you would find this heat shrink tubing now as I left that job 17 years ago.

Have a look at these: http://www.ccl-label.com...guage/en-US/Default.aspx I have no connection to this company, other than as a customer. Andy

We also use heat shrink labels by a company called Ritchey (again no affiliation other than a customer) Inspection courses for PPE available, and quite good. We use these for our offshore wind turbine tower climbing teams and dive kit. We use a barcode system that informs us of due inspection dates etc, and makes mobilisations easier. PM me if you need more details Phil

How many do you have that are permanently affixed to a lanyard? The companies i deal with have these and inspect the karabiners when they inspect the harness & lanyard.

most, if not all, are loose as the whole kit is used in various configurations and fixed karabiners aren't an option...
