I am in the process of doing out a list of safety, health and environmental rules that a contractor must abide by when carrying out work on our site. They are in point form and have to be signed for by the contractor. Does anyone have a list that they use and would mind sharing with me. Eddy Thanks eddie@bpmckeefry.com

Eddie I think you are pushing the limits for this question. You are in the best position to know what you need otherwise may I suggest a consultant could assist. Bob

Eddy, if you are a consultant then the ACoPs are a good source of thought for rules.... Each of these subjects could/should be covered: 1. CARRYING IDENTIFICATION 2. ACCESSING SITE 3. RISK ASSESSMENTS AND METHOD STATEMENTS 4. SITE ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS 5. EXCAVATIONS 6. WORK AT HEIGHT 7. LIFTING OPERATIONS AND LIFTING EQUIPMENT 8. ERECTION OF STEEL AND OTHER STRUCTURES 9. ROOFING AND CLADDING WORK 10. WORK WITH ASBESTOS 11. PLANT AND EQUIPMENT AND VEHICLES ON SITE 12. POWER TOOLS 13. FLAME-PRODUCING APPARATUS 14. DEMOLITION 15. NOISE 16. WORK NEAR WATER 17. CONTROL OF SUBSTANCES HAZARDOUS TO HEALTH 18. WORK IN CONFINED SPACES 19 COMPANY ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY 20 BRINGING CHEMICALS ON SITE 21 FUELS, OILS & OTHER HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 22 SILT 23 CEMENT & CONCRETE 24 WASTE MANAGEMENT 25 NOISE 26 DUST & FUMES 27 WILDLIFE & VEGETATION 28 ARCHAEOLOGICAL FINDS 29 ACTION IN THE EVENT OF A POLLUTION INCIDENT 30 ENVIRONMENTAL METHOD STATEMENTS

Oh, and there's a general section which also covers PPE, reporting accidents, providing first aid etc etc

John You missed Transport Training inc. induction etc etc :-) It really highlights how difficult it is to make a response in a vacuum. Bob

Excellent response by JohnW. Eddy, presumably you are looking for topics to be included for a site induction as well, just getting the contractor to sign a piece of paper does smack of paper safety. Ok the list may contain generic issues but ideally they should be specific to the tasks, risks and your workplace environment.

Thanks Bob, yes, I have different lists for different customers/contractors, never two customers agree on the same policy/rules. In that example list the site transport rules are included in item 11, as is requirement for certification/competence/training to use vehicles. Safety policies and pre-construction plans will usually outline training/records and requirements for inductions etc. but yes, inductions and toolbox talk schemes should be a 'site rule'. HAVs is missing from that list. Don't think I've ever succeeded in getting contractors to log HAVs trigger times :o/ JohnW
