Can someone advise me over this? In our pathology labs, we have conventional AFFF Fire extinguishers. I have been advised to replace these with AR - AFFF extinguishers, and replace existing water extinguishers with AFFF. The interim fire adviser has suggested this, along with the maintenance company. These existing extinguishers have been here since the year dot..... The labs do use a lot of alcohol solvents when testing. Thanks for any advice. Cheers Ed

On the limited information presented here this appears to be sound advice to me as you have a lot of alcohol solvents. AFFF -AR is good on polar solvents in 3% or 6% formulation. The presence of water fire extinguishers in this environment is something I would personnally discourage so as to eliminate confusion and use of an inappropriate extinguisher. I hope you find this useful. Lloyd (Fire Safety Advisor Canterbury Christ Church University)

Hi Ed, I'd agree with Ed,follow the advice you've been given and make sure you're all trained on which extinguishers to use in which situation and how to use them properly. Here's a quote from a web site explaining the benefits of AR-AFFF extinguishers: Alcohol-Resistant Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AR-AFFF) concentrates, when proportioned at the appropriate rate, form a vapor-suppressing seal for rapid control of both hydrocarbon fuel fires (diesel, gasoline, kerosene, etc.) and polar solvent fuel fires (alcohol, ketones, methanol, and MTBE products).
