Health and safety "misuse", such as children banned from playing conkers unless they wore goggles, or office workers banned from wearing flip flops, will be challenged by a new panel, the Government has announced"

Total waste of time, there are now so many panels and appeals processes that I'm losing track.
Shame we can't appeal against the Prime Minister's obvious bias against health and safety and ask him to reformulate his views based on evidence rather than prejudice. This panel seems to be more a reaction to political bias than anything else.

Ms Hackitt has suddenly popped up. Where has she been over the past few years to challenge and defend all the nonsense about health and safety. I agree, a total waste of time.

Be interesting to see what happens the first time an accident happens at an event after the panel has overturned a decision!

But the government has to keep all those big companies happy and to them H&S (in some eyes) costs money so don't want that!...jobs for the boys once the olde political career has ended and all that..

I couldn't help noticing in the HSE press release on this subject that the purpose of this panel was to "look into complaints regarding the advice given by non-regulators such as insurance companies, health and safety consultants and employers...."
http://www.hse.gov.uk/contact/myth-busting.htm
With the inclusion of health & safety consultants in this list it might be prudent not to throw too many stones, at least yet.
In the longer term, it would be illuminating to review the background of those peddling nonsense in the name of H&S.
The them-and-us argument concerning qualifications, registration and competence would then become much more clear.

Good point Wood!
It looks like just a collection of more 'fodder' for their myth-busting stories, rather than a serious attempt. After all, how can a single panel, remote from the problem, make such judgements?
Where's the right of redress for the person/organisation being complained about?
Does the panel intend to adjudicate on decisions made within workplaces too?
Can we use the panel to inform on 'cowboy' consultants' advice?
Isn't this just producing more ammunition for the Daily Mail?
The song 'there are more questions than answers..' comes to mind!

At last - a common sense initiative.
It should certainly address a great deal of the disproportionate and very often incorrect "advice" peddled by insurance companies, trade bodies, prequalification scheme advisors and HS advisors/consultants. The first giant step in the right direction!

Surely us H&S bods are there to interpret legislation and regulations into workable solutions into the workplace, does this panel think it will be able to overturn the law? Surely employers already have the power to ignore advice given by an over-enthusiastic consultant......??

It is nothing more than a PR exercise as far as I can tell. The Ms Hackitt and her chums should have said as much and spared everyone the inevitable read faces.

I applied to be a member but was rejected. Perhaps I should not have said in my cover letter that I disagreed with the HSE Chair's decision to rebuke Wimbledon for not showing the floodlit game on the big screens in the rain last year due to H&S concerns.

As someone pointed out in another post, nothing changes:
"The Prime Minister has an absolute genius for putting flamboyant labels on empty luggage" :Aneurin Bevan
Seems like we can add Judith to this too.
Shame, because I had high hopes for her when she first arrived

If they are prepared to answer all the general fodder we get, it could make this forum redundant.
