Hi Monticello
If you do a search it will provide you with loads of info. In a nutshell -
Depending what you "consult" on will depend on your premiums you will have to pay.
First off you should really get Professional Indemnity cover can vary - about £1million is pretty common from the replies but you may require more.
Public Liability in case things go wrong too
If you are on your own you won't need Employers Liability.
Hiscox Insurance have been mentioned many times - I went through a broker.
Good luck

The IOSH guide on consulting also gives sound advice in this area - downloadable from 'Information and Resources'.

Hi Monticello,
I have professional indemnity insurance with the previousley mentioned insurer as a contractor. I work within the ship build & ship repair industry (high risk). The organisation for which I work stipulated the level of cover at 5M, for which the premium is £90 per month.
Depending on the degree of risk, will determine the premium. I did find that anything over the 5M mark will require a specific agreement with the underwriter.
Hope this is of help
Regards
Alex
