Hello Everyone,
I have been given the task of carrying out a risk assessment in the warehouse at the facility I work in. last years assessment was very basic, with not much detail.
We are a low risk facility with two FLT's and 3 members of staff. There are 10 sets of shelving racks 3 pallets high. There is currently no pedestrian walk way through the warehouse for production staff to use when disposing of general waste.
I am looking for advice with regard to the flt charging area being moved from one side of the warehouse to the other, and also the warehouse desk is moving next door to the new proposed charging area.
Can anyone offer some advice on the issues I will need to be aware of.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Sam.

..... the flt charging area
..... warehouse desk
Sam, from that description I would NOT consider the facilty LOW risk, especially if a proper riosk assessment has never been carried out, as there is always the hazard of an FLT colliding with a person, and with the injury severity of that I don't think it can be decided as low risk.
Other posters have pointed you to some excellent guidance documents.
Important issue: pedestrian access/exit - should be separate from vehicle access/exit, and throughout the warehouse segregate pedestrians as much as possible, e.g. a walkway to the desk, with barriers preferably etc.

Hi Sam.
A well ventilated area for the FLT charging area.
Also, the location of the "warehouse desk" being "next door" to the FLT charging area. Can you please elaborate?
Are there any periodic checks on the racking?
Do the production staff wander through the warehouse when they please? If you can't have a dedicated walkway- perhaps limiting the times they can go through will reduce the risk.

Hi John,
Thanks for the advice, I have already brought up the issues about segregating pedestrians from moving FLT's with my manager. Which is why we are looking into relocating the charging area and staff desk to a quieter area of the warehouse,
I see what you mean about not being low risk, and thank you for pointing that out, I am off now to read all the wonderful information and advice I have been sent form everyone!!

Sam, I don't know whether your remit includes fire risk. If so, don't underestimate the speed of fire spread and heat output in pallet racking, depending on the nature of the palletised goods (unwrapped steel parts or lighter fuel aerosols), the need for early warning, adequate exit routes and lighting.

Hi Andy,
Yes the charging area is open and well ventilated, with no overhead lighting, The location of the desk will be approx 10 meters away from the charging area, which allows for safety barriers to be fitted.
The production staff can enter the warehouse at any time, we already have in place a safe walkway with barriers fitted, but there are gaps to allow for emergency escape, and this is where pedestrians enter the FLT area at the end of shifts to gain access to the skips located outside the warehouse.
I will recommend that waste and rubbish be left in a designated area for collection by warehouse staff, this should eliminate the need for people in the warehouse unnecessarily.
Fabulous thanks for your help, food for thought!!!

Hello David,
I fully understand the Risk of a fire, I have recently completed the Nebosh Fire safety and risk management certificate.
The products we store are not flammable, and do not melt and are not classes as hazardous in any way.
But I am always on the look out for some good advice, to help me gain experience,
thanks. :)
