Dear All,
I have recently been employed in a construction company as a site junior health and safety officer which is my first job in the safety field. I have completed my NEBOSH Certificate and currently doing my NEBOSH Diploma.
As a career path, I wish to continue in the construction field. To get a better understanding and know how of the activities for e.g. shuttering, de-shuttering, cladding, scaffolding erection, dismantling,formworks, falsework, how construction vehicles operate, is there any course available? As a safety officer, do I require a knowledge of these activities?
E.g. scaffold acting as support work for decking? As a safety officer, do I need to know in details how to do the calculations about the weights, type of scaffolding to be used?

Various courses run by Construction Skills.
....but you'll probably need to do a lot of learning on the job, and identifying the standards appropriate to various construction activities.

You can not beat on site experience. You mentioned shuttering, de-shuttering, scaffolding, false work and formwork etc. As you are probably aware these fall under temporary works and require design calculations for loading etc. leave this to the design experts at this stage in your development and get on as many courses as you can to develop your knowledge in construction.

congractulations on getting a job in the first place, i did things the other way round, ie started in construction and then got a interest in H&S, you will have done your touch screen test for your CSCS card? try and get your employer to put you through the five day SMSTS cource, all are a lower level than the NeBOSH gen Certificate so you will find easy, trips and falls, and working with out PPe, tend to be the common ones, in construction. and Plant movment, also unloading of deliveries enjoy! and good luck with the studies, i am thirty years in construction and cant get a foot in door H&S wise and at stage i am going to give up.

Just read some of the posts and unfortunately in my opinion this shows the glaring defects of the Health and safety system.Before I give my opinion good luck to nikhil for getting your post but it amazes me if you have a Nebosh and very limited experience rather than excess experience like scotwahey why employers seem to favour this.I am currently employed in ealth and safety for a company but can't go any further the problem I find I have my Nebosh General Cert. and over 30 years experience on the tools and management but if I apply for a job elsewhere I need the diploma.

I have twice been overlooked at work for H&S roles, for some one outside the industry, Deploma, who then comes and askes for advice, which i am more than willing to give. but like you am finding that! well things are dead, am now looking for any thing outside construction to be honest. membership is also up soon,and cant see point of renewing, but i stress good luck to Nickhill, and wish him a long and Successful career
