I will be carrying out a risk assessment soon regarding the storage of large (4m long x 1.2m diameter) rolls of heavy duty material in our warehouse and I was enquiring if anyone out there has done anything similar. We currently store these vertically (on their end), but are looking at storing them 2 high. I have tried searching for any specific standards regarding base to height ratios, but with no luck. Appreciate any info from yourselves before I start the risk assessment. Thanks in anticipation.

Not sure if there is any documented guidance around but I have been told by an HSE inspector in the past that tower stacking should not be more than a ratio of 1:4. Phil W

there is a HSE book 2safety in the storage and handling of steel and other metal stock". Look around pages 34-41 in this, it covers steel coils which are of a similar size.

mickey, if you buy these rolls, ask your supplier how they manage their warehouse. If you sell them, how do your customers do the job. Of course there's no guarantee that they will be "safe" but they may have been through the same exercise you are about to do. If your warehouse is protected by sprinklers, be aware of the increased fire loading and the capabilities of the sprinklers in controlling a fire in vertical reel stores.
