Hello, I'm after some advice from those who have experienced this. If we intend to transport diesel, in drums, via the road what precautions should we be taking. Are there any limits on quantities or specifications on container structural integrity? Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi. This will fall into scope of the ADR regs.
I would suggest that you contact a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser. You will need an ADR trained driver, safety equipment, documentation, approved IBC's.......

Hi, I have read on the HSE's web site (after posting my query here) that there is a 1000 litre threshold when carrying diesel?

Tony.
I would suggest that you contact a DGSA- a well known search engine will throw up a few for you to choose from.
I think you would be pushing it if you had an IBC full of diesel.

You mentioned the Diesel is to be transported in 1000 litre container then an IBC can be used the IBC will need UN certification i.e. UN 31H1/Y this indicates the IBC is rigid plastic and can be used for liquids, and can contain a liquid of Packing group III which is the correct Packing Group for diesel.
Precautions required is that the driver will only need awareness training commensurate with their responsibilities, i.e. action in spillage, fire and properties of the diesel.
No documentaion is required i.e. Instructions in Writing (Tremcard)
No equipment except 2KG fire extinguisher.
1000 Litres is the limit for diesel which can be carried under the "small load threshold", above 1000 litres then full training, documentation, safety equipment, ADR certificate would be required.

As previous posters have said 1000 Lts is limit under the "Small Load Threshhold", that said it is still alot of fuel in one container.
I am assuming you will be filling some form of on site plant? Do you need that much in one delivery?
When we have Diesel MEWPs or a telehandler on site, we use 120 Ltr Bunded Containers (Like Wheely Bins) - They also have their own built in hand pump. Simply a matter of take it in a van down to the local supplier fill it up, back to site and fill up the equipment.
If you want more info let me know and I'll PM you the details. Alternatively if your near Wakefield you can always pop over and I'll show what we use.
Regards
Clive
