It's Tuesday (the worst day of the week), the weather is rubbish and there are probably a million places you would rather be than at work, but let's forget about all that and focus on the positive! What do you enjoy most about your job in Health and Safety?.....And for those on here who are still waiting to get that all important big break, what are your expectations and what do you think you will enjoy about the job?

For me, everyday really is different, new challenges, new solutions to find, I get to meet new people from different places that I wouldn't usually get to meet and I get to travel a lot. Thats the kind of answer that you would give in an interview, but it's true.

What are your thoughts....

My thoughts...

Well, I came into a business where H&S was not taken seriously at all. A lot of resentment when I wanted to put in policies and procedures that most on here would take a sharp intake of breath when they found out that they weren't there in the first place!!!

I had a meeting with the MD and presented a gap analysis- he was quite shocked.

Now, I have his backing and we are making headway- its a huge culture shock to the management though. And they are finding out the H&S isn't there to stop them doing things- its there to help them do things safely.

I really do enjoy what I do- even though sometimes its very frustrating! As most on here will testify!

There is still a few pockets of resistance- but as the Borg say "Resistance is futile".

I'm having a good day today!!

My enjoyment comes from just being employed in H&S, especially coming to Australia from the UK in 2010 and being able to always remind myself what it was like to dream about not only getting that H&S role but just getting a job.

I am able to jump in a 4x4 vehicle any day I want and travel about the desert and visit wireline, well test, well integrity and e-line whenever I choose, I get to experience a variety of O&G , if I am to believe some people who I have come into contact with, not many other O&G H&S people have that luxury.

Although it is very rewarding it is also very frustrating, more so than I would like but these are challenges all the same.

I've been working in the environmental NGO sector for 20years, being a H&S Adviser has allowed me to help plan and get involved in a wide variety of projects across the UK. Never getting tied to one project and losing track of all the other initiatives going on.
Frustrations? Many and often, but what job dosen't carry those?

Rewarding bits for me are when the light bulb moment occurs with the people I am speaking to and I can see that they have got it!

Frustrations are the amount of people still anti health and Safety 38 years after the Act came in and who quote it is all common sense!!!
