Hi, just looking for some peoples opinion. I have been offered an interview for a System Safety Advisor role at a power station, would like to possibly hear from anyone that has previously worked or is still in this type of facility/industry and their experiences especially in regards to how this has helped them develop their skills in safety and any other relevant information that they could pass on. Thanks in advance Chris

Chris, Might be a daft question but what type of power station? John

John, It is an electricity generating station, mainly powered by natural gas. Chris

So, ccgt, ocgt, boiler? I suppose its not particularly relevant, I have 10 years experience in Gas/coil/oil fired generation units and 6 years working in the safety department. I suppose one of the major experiences I have had, is that of identifying weak areas within the SMS, persuading management of the necessary changes and seeing them through, as well as being part of the safety consultation process and behavioural safety groups, increasing and improving the safety profile on an aging site. If you want more specifics, feel free to PM. Rob

Chris Biggest single issue is probably outages. With your offshore experience guess you are familiar with the problems. The industry has mature systems for HV working, so that when you hear about a fatality or serious incident in a substation, probably somebody breaking in to try and steel the cables.

There has been problem with some National Grid capacitors within substations over the last few years, cant bring the exact details to minsd, and it shouldn't really affect you as NG safety rules cover these, its worth knowing though I would guess, as it has had impacts on safety around our site. Agree with Peter that outages are one of the biggest issues, along with possible replants on CCGTs, my CDM knowledge has improved over the years when I have been representing the client.

Auchie hi, Just to clarify, I believe Dimond36742, is referring to FMJL Current Transformers. Google has more if you are interested. As for the role, the power industry safety rules have evolved from the old CEGB. Very robust BUT if you're not aware of the differences to "Modern thinking" you may dig yourself into a hole depending on which company etc. In short permits may only cover "safety from the system" (plant isolation etc) and establishing "general safety" falls to the supervisor or similar. General safety does not always require a permit..... But the exact role, application of rules and definitions are down to the company. Seeing as the job title has "system" in it maybe you should ask to see a copy of the safety rules before the interview - at least find out the definition of "the system" Good luck, Jim
