About to start my diploma in occupational Health and Safety any advice out there my main concern is unit D is the standard of the report they require.

Its obvious you hav not started
there is no need at all to worry about unit D you wont be starting that for another 2 years
its unit A you have to watch
good luck and remember the diploma only wastes your life and evenings
for 3 years max

I did the British Safety council diploma. It was by no means easy but a lot more user friendly than NEBOSH I think. Still the same qual at the end of the day. I've done NEBOSH Gen & Env certs so have had some exposure to them

psycho has answered your query, albeit from his own perspective.
Once you get going you will hopefully have plenty of support from your training provider, who will want you to pass, and also from NEBOSH who will want the same. NEBOSH provide very deteailed information including examiners reports for each of the units including the dreaded D.
Whilst the Diploma does take up a lot of time for 18 months to 2 years, it is certainly not a waste of time, and is well worth it in the end. There will be highs and lows but stick with it. Once you get going use the IOSH Study forum to your advantage.

Just handed in my unit D last month and the advice I would give is - make a start on it early. I know it totally goes against what most people can actually be motivated to do (ie leave it to the last minute when the pressure is on) but the more you do now the more help you can get from your course tutors.
Even if you just put together a basic structure and plan and get the business description bit down on paper, your tutors can give you invaluable feedback to make sure you're heading in the right direction. Also go through the marking scheme and work out the weighting for each section and translate this into a rough word count. that helped me as a guide to level of detail required for the marks.
The whole diploma is a bit of a long process and I have to admit i underestimated the amount of revision time required for the exams. But having now passed units A B and C I know it was worthwhile.

Good luck with the Diploma, I did mine open learning whilst doing a full time job, not a waste of time if you know what you want. It has opened doors for me and whilst it took hours of study early am and late pm and at weekends , its worth it. As a previous reply to doing unit D then get started with a plan, start early and it will go well. The Law paper is the great one to get past, but if you study and use the older papers you will pass. good luck to this and the doors that will open in time.

please note this wastes your life not your time
once compleated you have just gained the most respected of all of the health and safety qualifications
it will guarantee you an interview just by having it
and i only have part D left to do then its Gradiosh then chartered then i am never doing another exam in my life

Thanks all for some vert interesting answers,I know it will be hard to get going but hard work never kileed anybody. The reason I decided to take the diploma was that I have the General Certificate which is all very well and good.I found when I was applying for jobs I was getting the same old answer all the time I didn't meet the criteria why I found very disappointing as I have been in a role for Health and Safety in the construction area for over 5 years 4 as a manager with over 30 years experience between being on the tools and site management but unless you pocess the diploma the door gets slammed in your face. As I said I know it will be hard but I am going to try to get through it between a year and 18 months many thanks and I was looking for ideas or templates for Unit D as in my opinion that will be the hardest part.

I am also about to sit my nebosh diploma starting in a few weeks and would welcome any advice , not sure about the dreaded Unit D but by the sounds of it i will have to make a start on it asap

like many other replies, I also took and passed my Dip via distance learning , passing it in 2010 yaay for me! It is hard work, if you are just starting I'd recommend not worrying about Unit D for a while yet, Unit A will give you headaches a plenty!
However you are doing it, good luck, use the forums, they can be a tremdous help, and if you do get any referrals, don't get too down hearted (I'm coaching a friend after his 2nd Unit A referral.)
Remember it will be worth it in the end

Just slightly off topic here but I've noticed a couple of comments relating to Unit A being pretty tough. I'm on a waiting list for the next NEBOSH Dip intake at the moment and sounds like i need to be prepared for some serious studying. What makes unit A a tough one to get through?

It's because of the sheer volume of legislative info you need to take in; plus the potentially hundreds of case law samples you can draw on, which can make it daunting. I personally enjoyed it, but a lot of people will find it hard.

Unit A is on Managing Health and Safety and covers a wide range of topics including principles of health and safety management and criminal and civil law. The elements on law include a lot of case studies that you will need to remember and be able to quote in the examination.The bits about event tree and fault tree analysis are also pretty hard going.
For my part I found Unit B on Hazardous Agents the toughest to get my head around.
Come to think of it, the whole thing is tough, but I guess we have our individual strenghts and weaknesses; I was lucky in that I was interested in the legal bits and managed to remember the relevant case law when I needed to.

Well thanks again for all the great information I went the diploma route as the General Certificate didn't get me anywhere if I was applying for a vacancy but I always got the feedback you need the diploma.Trying to do it 18 months tops between my work.

Good luck. It is possible to do, I did it in 18 months or so whilst working, just make sure that you can ensure you have enough time to do everything without becoming too rushed.
I was very lucky in having great support from both my employer and family who left me to it when I needed the time, I doubt everyone has that luxury.

Good luck with the NEBOSH Diploma, I have recently started the NVQ Level 5 Diploma. I chose this route to avoid the dreaded exams. Handing in evidence for the work you do on a daily basis, felt like a better choice for me.
You still meet the criteria for Grad IOSH at the end of it all.

Get hold of as many examiners reports as you can and practise, practice, practice!
Take note of the comments in the examiners reports, it is as much about answering in the 'NEBOSH way' as about having the core knowledge. Your training provider should be able to advise you too and will no doubt be giving you example papers to work through.
