Hi I know that under reg 9 of LOWER the safety cage attached to a forklift truck if used for lifting persons needs to be exaimined every 6 months. My question is can the insurers yearly inspection count as one of the LOWER examination? Thanks

James You may already be aware Guidance Note PM28 is specific guidance on non-integrated working platforms (cages). This document may have the answer I used it myself when buying one of these platforms, Its probably worth a look at if you haven't already. Rob H

If the forklift truck is being used to lift persons via a safety cage, the fork lift truck should be subject to statutory inspection under LOLER every 6 months. Therefore the inspector should inspect both forklift truck and safety cage every 6 months. NB: as per the above post, PM28 provides guidance on the use of such cages, they should really only be used for unplanned, ad hoc work.

I don't want to be picky, but my understanding from PM28 was that cages on fork lifts should not be used for routine work? I would avoid the term "unplanned" when dealing with work at height, since all such work must be adequately planned. If a task has to be performed on a regular basis, it may be the case that there is alternative means of access to height than a cage that would be reasonably practicable eg scissor lift.
