Hi All Has it been known to specify in procedures to dig for a contractor to have available toothless buckets when digging ? I dont know the cons to this but I do know its known by the guys on ground to be a better way. just looking for ideas to help with utility strikes , thanks Joe

Its fairly common in high risk areas, such as close proximity to gas and water mains etc, however toothless buckets will not prevent damage to smaller utilities such as streetlighting , low pressure services etc

Hand digging within 500 mil of known services is the only reliable way to prevent service strikes with other interventions such as trial holes, CAT scans, service drawings, etc. Any mechanical device still has the potential to disturb and/or damage utilities.

Vacuum excavation is also a possibility. Quite expensive, but not as expensive as a cable strike! Especially if fibre optics are involved.
