Hi Guys,
i have just been made redundant from the motoring industry. i had been thinking of moving to the HSE industry for a while now and whilst in my last emploment i gained the IOSH managing safety cert. I am now leaning towards doing the NEBOSH general cert and trying for a career in the HSE industry. A few people have been positive and said go for it but it would seem most of the HSE vacancies are in the construction industry of which i have no experience. having said that i have no experience in the HSE industry either.
I have no doubt in my own abilities and once show i can do anything, but i am stumped right now and need help.
Am i doing the right thing ??
Once qualified will anyone take me on.
thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to read this. Steve

Hi Steve
Sorry to hear of your redundancy.
Before you take the plunge can I suggest that you do a search on the forums to see what the job situation is like for us H&S people -especially those looking for work like myself. I am degree qualified and a chartered member with over 8 yrs experience in a wide variety of disciplines within the H&S bracket - I am a generalist as opposed to a specialist (maybe that is what is holding me back?). The jobs are few and far between and with many experienced (much more than me in many cases) candidates going for the roles and thus the competition is fierce to say the least. So much so i am considering moving out of H&S. Sorry to put a bit of a downer on things but the industry is difficult to stay in at the moment never mind break into.
If you are keen to get into H&S why not find something else to pay the mortgage for a while and study H&S on the side until you get the necessary experience and qualifications?

Hi Steve

I have 30 years experience in construction, from labouring, to holding site management ticket, did the NEBOSH, general certificate, and agency will say sorry, not enough expierience, my advice gain a higher qualification, its all down to money, can you afford, thats why i went for the certificate, not diploma
Research, see if there are jobs? and if Stuie is unable to secure work? it helps me understand why i cant get foot in door, when up against such quality
good luck, hope something turns up, i type this as i have had anouther "sorry" letter, keep trying and all the best

I think it probably is hard to break into H&S directly, I'm not sure how many people do, I expect most are like me an slide into it from their existing roles. But I've had the Certificate for a number of years (Dip and CMIOSH now) and while I held that and was looking for work in my industry sector I found that having a working and certficated knowledge of H&S was a very high positive in the application process.
If you're signing on as a job seeker is it possible to sign up for the cert free via your local FEC? On the basis that it will help you find work - in H&S directly or otherwise.

I say go for it, if you are interested then why not. Have you any idea what sector you want to crack? Perhaps seen as you have experience in the motor inductry perhaps you can get into it there?

But yes gain another qual in H&S, and perhaps First Aid too, and if you can ask the job centre if they can help you with gaining experience with companies in your area.

Best of luck with it all.

Hi Steve

I don't know what part of the country you are living in, but Jaguar, Landrover are looking for skilled people in the car industry, If you want to get into the H & S field then do the NEBOSH general Cert first, or Diploma, which puts you on the ladder, H & S vacancies are far fewer than a few years ago, but it depends what your ambitions are
